Search Engine Stats Tell Strange Tales

I don't often check the statistics of this site. I assume that this blog is only read with any regularity by a few folks who know me personally and check in periodically to see if I am telling any dark secrets about them in between random youtube posts and pointless stories.

Every once in a while I perform minor maintenance and check all of the stats including the keyword searches that bring visitors here. I just did some cleanup tonight and it is with great pleasure that I announce that someone typed "never trust a preacher with a boner" into a major search engine and found this site.

If this is you and you are still reading this blog welcome aboard and I hope you weren't expecting photos.

BackTrack Linux 2 - Electric Boogaloo

BackTrack Linux 2 is a live linux distribution - which means that it will run on a computer using just the CD rom and the installed RAM - no hard drive necessary. There are a lot of these live distros floating around on the Internet these days but I love this one for a few reasons:
1. Its free to download the ISO file ( That is a reason to love Linux more so than a single distro I know. I just repeat this in hopes of tempting the full time MS users to try it.)
2. Lots of fun and informative tools for exploring networks. Here is a list.
3. It runs on my Sony laptop and found my wireless USB dongle - WITH NO TWEAKING!!! If you have EVER tried to install Linux on a laptop you know that this is a major plus.
4. It uses the KDE desktop and can trace its roots back to Slackware - so you now know where I stand in those holy wars.
5. It is easy to to boot to a desktop and start having fun - even if you have never used Linux before. You may want to avoid some of those tools until you know exactly what they do and you shouldn't use them for evil once you learn how to use them. Some of them can get you into big trouble if you use them on networks where you have no business using them.
BackTrack 2: get it here. learn about it here.
Don't be an asshole with it though. This distro is aimed at folks who are involved in locating and solving network security issues - and they have enough problems.

Extra Special NSFW Jay and Silent Bob post

OK, I'm going to stop with these youtube clips now, I promise. I just couldn't resist the retelling of this epic film using such few words. You may want to find your volume control before you start.

More Jonathan Coulton

The Jonathan Coulton stuff at youtube keeps getting funnier. I had almost forgotten about these guys (On the other hand, I guess the money I spent on drugs and therapy to do so is now wasted).

More Songs About Monkeys And Zombies

I might be a little late to the party on this one because this guy's stuff has been pretty popular on the Internet for a while now but Jonathan Coulton has some truly awesome tunes.

Here are a couple of clips from youtube.

A live "Code Monkey" remix with extra ukulele goodness:

A live performance of the popular "Your Brains":

Patty Smith in The Hall of Fame

I read the news today oh boy. Patty Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night. I get the impression that some folks are shocked at this. I am not. You want "shocking" and Patty Smith in the same blog post, follow me back in time courtesy of youtube:

I have been sitting on this clip for a while and have forgotten who to credit (or blame, if you will) but I think I saw it first at Bedazzled - a very cool blog.

The Turd that went PING!

I have purchased three laptops from Fry's since last Wednesday. I am not happy about this because I only needed one and would have like to have picked out one that actually worked during my first trip.

The first one was sold to me as a "refurbished model" but when I arrived home I found a slip of paper in the box stating that it was a used laptop which was supposed to be returned to the manufacturer due to a number of problems. One of the problems being that the previous owner had managed to get a PCMCIA card stuck in it. Sure enough - the card was jammed in tight and the laptop failed to complete a reboot after I ran Windows update. It was stuck in an endless cycle of rebooting - of course no OS or repair disk was included so back to Fry's I went.

When the small child saw the box containing the first laptop she inquired as to the contents and I told her it was the machine that goes PING!. It's never too early to start with the Monty Python quotes. She was disappointed to find that it did not, in fact, go ping. I was disappointed because I already had some one-liners about ICMP Echo requests ready for her - never too early for bad computer humor either.

Like a complete dumb ass, I decided that I needed another laptop exactly like the first one with the one exception being that the damned thing actually had to work. Well, this was too much to ask for as soon as I had returned home with the replacement laptop, I encountered the same reboot issue as the first one. So that's two laptops in three days. I don't want to mention the maker of these shit boxes by name but they go by two initials that also indicate my favorite brand of British brown sauce and they once bought out Compaq.

It was on my third trip to Fry's that I decided to go with another brand. So I purchased a Sony Vaio. I have had it three days and my fingers are still crossed.
