I read a lot as a child

So this morning, I’m driving past the new courthouse in the sleepy little town of Monroe Georgia when I see this African-American fellow walking down the side of the road in the same direction and looking at the asphalt in front of him. To avoid hitting him, I aim my car toward the center of the road. At the same time a mockingbird flies in front of the vehicle, lands abruptly in the road directly ahead of my left front tire, turns toward me and stretches his wings to heaven.

The bird’s death probably seemed rehearsed if there were any other onlookers. I could not help but to peer into the rear view mirror at the mass of feathers spinning on the median as the fellow walked on unaware of the loss of avian life just a few feet away.

My first thoughts were of Boo Radley - and you know why. I have not read the novel in years and there it is. Such is the wonder of a great book. Of course having a powerful metaphor as a title probably helps bring the memories to light.
